Neptune.

Dean Grakner was an old friend of Bloxnor’s, an elderly Neptunian man who had known Bloxnor since he started college. Grakner knew what a brilliant scientist Bloxnor would become someday and always pushed him to challenge himself. Bloxnor’s first job at a scientific firm came from Grakner’s recommendations.

Grakner graciously shook Charlie’s hand as the inter-terrestrial joined himself and Bloxnor for lunch. “Welcome,” he said. “Your father has told me much about you, young one.”

“I’ve heard a lot about you too,” Charlie replied, not sure what else to say.

After ordering lunch, Dean Grakner asked Charlie what his goals were. It was a question that he had dreaded after being at this university all day and hearing people talk about academic goals of various kinds.

“Well, as you may have guessed, a lot of this is new to me,” Charlie replied, as Grakner gave him a sympathetic nod. “I just wanted to find out where I came from. That was my only goal for so long that…I don’t know…”

“Understandable,” Grakner replied. “The goal of finding out where you came from seemed so insurmountable, living on a planet with no access to extraterrestrials that you never looked past it. Now, you’re at a fork in the road that you never thought existed in the first place.”

“Yes,” Charlie said, pleasantly surprised that Grakner understood him as well as he did. “Exactly, sir.”

“Well, I am just putting this offer on the table,” Grakner said. “No pressure. Discuss it with your father. Whatever. But, given the unique set of circumstances, you being new to this planet and all, I would be able to see clear to letting you take the scholastic aptitude test. You could go to school here, with an education program that is adapted to your own ability and life experience. Learn about the planet while opening doors of opportunities for you, should you decide to stay on Neptune.”

Charlie looked over at his father, his mouth gaping a little. Bloxnor smiled politely as Grakner continued.

“I assure you that no one will be allowed to treat you any differently than any other student,” Grakner said emphatically. “Any fascination with your genetic code will be restricted to the studies and books we already have. Unless you volunteer for further studies, which is, of course, a great way to make extra money and your prerogative.”

Charlie paused for a second, taking it all in. “Wow!” he said. “This is amazing. Thank you so much.”

As soon as Charlie gave Mr. Grakner a grateful, genuine handshake, a bright light poured in from the nearby force field window that overlooked the campus grounds. Everyone in the cafeteria was blinded by these lights, which did not allow them to see the Dookimon scout ships that were hovering outside the window. When the lights faded, both the ship and Charlie were gone, leaving both Bloxnor and his long-time educational mentor dumbfounded.
